Website Changed : Activated cloudflare

Posted on January 19, 2013

I have read about Cloudflare for a while and it seems to provide considerable benefits. I have noticed that this site is sometimes a bit slow to load and Google certainly thinks so.  A potential problem is in Ad revenue as many online complain that Cloudflare has destroyed their ad-sense revenue (drop of 80% plus).  I don’t really run this site to make ad revenue and have notice a huge fall off of revenue (despite visits not changing significantly) – so am curious as to what difference this now makes. Previously I wasn’t inclined to go through the hassles of changing the DNS entries etc to make this work, however my ISP has enabled a very easy method of enabling it so I have now turned it on.

If you notice any changes (positive and negative), please share your thoughts in the comments.

Thanks

Some interesting site and Google advert revenue statistics

Posted on November 26, 2011

For those that may be interested :

  • j-j.co.za has had over 63 000 page views since May 2011
  • September 2011 was the most viewed month with over 19 000 views
  • Google adverts have been served since May
  • A total of R1250 has been earned in advertising revenue in that time
  • A click on an advert can earn anything from 60c up to R10, with an average of around R3
  • A page with a thousand views (and no clicks) can earn about 8c  (at times can be zero)
  • My average click through rate is around 0.9%

So thanks to those of you who do click on the adverts, they don’t make millions but do help to pay for the hosting and domain costs to keep the site running.

Adding a Facebook ‘like’ button to my blog

Posted on August 01, 2010

I just added a Facebook ‘like’ button to the site. It appears below each post (for now) and let’s people like a particular article, with the added benefit that it posts through to their Facebook page, with an optional comment if they like.

I have used the WordPress “Like” plugin by Bottomless (found here).  The quick bit of testing I have done so far seems to show that it works well enough. I will test it out for a while and then see whether to keep it on, come up with another option or what to do.

If anyone has added something similar to their site and would like to share the experiences please do. The more input and ideas the better. I am already thinking I would like a “social media” bar that gives the option to Facebook Like, Tweet etc all from one place instead of having in a number of different places. I have yet to find something that does that for me. Will keep looking.
