Three channels added to DSTV Mobile, SS6 dropped, monthly fees start
Posted on March 3, 2011In a press release sent out yesterday (29/3/2011) DSTV announced that three new channels are being added to DStv Mobile. The temporary Supersport 6 channel in operation during the World Cup also falls away.
CNNi, E!Entertainment and Sony Max will be added to the existing nine DStv channels that were already in operation (ten with the temporary Supersport 6 during the World Cup).
From the 1st April 2011, the channel lineup will be: eNews, CNNi, Channel O, E! Entertainment, Sony Max, Africa Magic, Cartoon Network, Trace Urban, SuperSport 1, 2 and 3 and SuperSport Blitz
This is a nice balancing up of the channel selection and the addition of CNN is certainly welcome.
The 1st April also sees the introductory phase coming to an end and the new subscription charges for DStv Mobile will come into effect at R36 monthly. DStv Premium subscribers will receive DStv Mobile on both Drifta and DVB-H handsets at no extra cost while DStv Compact subscribers who subscribe via the Drifta before 31 March 2011 can avoid subscription fees until 31 March 2012.

I have had some comments (from unnamed sources) who are more than a little annoyed with DSTV as they bought their Drifta with the intention of using it with a Blackberry or Nokia. While there was no charge for the service they were prepared to sit back and wait, but now, having to fork out each month and still not be able to use the device as promised they are rather unhappy, even going as far as to suggest DSTV should put off the subscription until the service works as advertised. mmm. Any thoughts on this?

Riaan just posted on my “Thoughts on Drifta” entry with the following :
“Justin just some feed back. I received a sms during the week telling me that ekstra channels will be added to the Drifta. I phoned DSTV today for another query and while I was waiting for the system to process the data I asked the consultant which channels it would be. Here they are: CNN, Sony Max, Boomerang and E-Entertainment.”
It will be interesting to see if Boomerang gets added to the lineup (as a 4th channel) when they go live, or whether this was a slip up from the consultant.
